Alpaca

The Andean Heritage
The majestic Peruvian Andes are home to a living treasure. At altitudes of up to four thousand five hundred meters, alpacas live in a challenging climate that can experience extreme temperature fluctuations within a single day, from thirty degrees Celsius down to minus twenty degrees Celsius. It is precisely these harsh conditions that give alpaca wool its exceptional resilience and insulating power. Around eighty-five percent of the world's population is found in Peru, concentrated in the extreme altitudes of the south. APUKAI relies on the expertise of the most renowned Peruvian textile manufacturers for the sourcing of this precious fiber, guaranteeing the highest ecological and social standards.

Natural Properties
Alpaca wool is considered one of the most exclusive and functional fibers in the world. Its microscopically fine hollow fibers naturally store body heat while allowing the skin to breathe without feeling heavy. Since, unlike classic sheep's wool, alpaca wool does not contain lanolin, it is naturally hypoallergenic and particularly gentle on sensitive skin. Another privilege of this natural fiber is its enormous color diversity. The animals' fleece shines in over twenty natural shades, from the purest white and soft beige tones to deep black. As a result, many finished fabrics can be produced completely without chemical dyeing processes.

The fineness of the measurement
The quality and value of alpaca wool are measured internationally in microns. This unit of measurement describes the diameter of a single hair fiber in thousandths of a millimeter. A human hair measures about sixty to eighty microns. Conventional wool is often over thirty microns and is primarily used for heavy blankets. Fine merino wool or high-quality cashmere, however, reach values in the low twenties. The lower the micron value, the softer and more luxurious the material feels on the skin. For particularly exquisite garments, a fiber fineness of about twenty-one microns is used. In the textile industry, this outstanding quality level is traditionally referred to as Baby Alpaca. This term therefore does not refer to the age of the animal but is a historical seal for exceptional fineness. APUKAI exclusively processes this rare grade of Baby Alpaca or even higher quality selections such as the extremely fine Royal Alpaca for its editions.

Craft and Ready-to-Wear
The creation of our editions combines professional precision with traditional craftsmanship. While the fine yarn is spun by established Peruvian traditional businesses, the actual confection of the garments takes place in very limited editions. Here, we work closely with independent artisans and local partners in Peru. Depending on the design, the garments are either entirely handcrafted or undergo elaborate hand-finishing after machine-based production, directly within the artisans' family environments. This conscious combination of masterful yarn and authentic handcraft creates garments of lasting value and simultaneously promotes the economic independence of the local people.
